How Get Rid of White Pores on Nose (Sebaceous Filaments)

I used to have a problem with plugged-up pores on my nose. They were clogged with gross white stuff, and there were many on my nose. Here's how to get rid of them.

Cotton swabs!

Wonderful and easy. Take a warm bath, and wait for those horrible things to expand. Then, take dry cotton swabs to them, running the swabs across. It does not take much effort. I use Q-Tip brand, but I imagine any will do. I have not tried with cotton balls.

How to Get Rid of Acne on Back of Neck

I used to have many horrid acne bumps on the back of my neck, in the hairline. They were not visible due to my medium-length hair, but still itched and would sometimes bleed.

Don't pick at the acne.
Never pick at acne. That is one reason my acne bled. It will also lead to scars. Furthermore, this will lead to difficulty applying the acne creams (discussed later) to the area, because it is best not to do so on open skin.

Use an acne-treating cream.
What worked best for me was benzoyl 2 percent strength from Neutrogena. It is called "On-the-spot." It can be found at Target or "that big blue store" (which I don't support due to receipt searches, which, by the way, are usually optional, since they have no search warrant.) It is around 6 dollars. I apply it at night and it works great. It cleared my acne in the region in maybe 4 days or so.

If your acne is more stubborn, do consider twice a day.

I do not suggest anything higher that 3 percent. Studies show anything higher is not necessarily more effective (just like exercising too much may lead to overuse injury or fatigue.)

If you've been picking (stop!) then maybe use Vaseline or Neosporin to treat until they close. They are made for open wounds. Some dermatologists say Vaseline is better, as lower risk of negative interactions (due to fewer ingredients, possibly.) To be honest, I never used either, and was desperate so one time put the benzoyl on a slightly bleeding acne bump. Nothing horrible happened, but I do believe it says not to put on open wounds, so it can be risky.

Bear in mind benzoyl may damage colored clothing or pillowcases etc, so consider white pillowcases, or just cover with a towel. Also, allow the cream to air-dry to minimize risk (doesn't take long.)

A warm (not too hot, which may be drying your skin out) shower may help get rid crusted blood, and allow the acne cream to help better.

Consider a benzoyl peroxide shower wash.
I use Neutrogena Rapid Clear, which has 10 percent benzoyl. This is higher than the 2.5 percent limit I mentioned earlier, but doesn't seem to irritate my skin, and because it washes off anyway, I feel it is ok.

Don't touch your neck.
That irritates acne, and hands usually have lots of germs.

Consider changing your diet.
Getting rid of processed sugars, and following a diet which minimizes inflammation and insulin-spikes is good for overall health. The people of Kitava have little to no acne. Low-insulin spikes may play a role. It is a small island.

What Order to Eat Macronutrients for Weight Loss

Macronutrients are generally fat, protein, and carbohydrates. There are different types of each (for example, casein protein, saturated fat, monounsaturated fat and so on) but for this discussion we will assume you have already worked out those differences for your diet.

For fat loss, I recommend fats and fiber-rich foods first. Most low-sugar vegetables are great examples of fiber-rich foods. Then protein and lastly, although best avoided, any high-sugar foods.

The reason for these recommendations is that we want to keep insulin spikes as low as we can. Cauliflower will produce a very low spike in insulin, and is not anything dangerous to most. Healthy fats will also not produce large spikes.

Bear in mind, foods that combine fats and protein, as well as protein on its own, can lead to undesirable protein spikes. Whey protein, for example, may lead to a spike in some individuals. This may not be dangerous for most and in moderation, but ideally for weight loss, insulin spikes should be kept quite low. And exception may be after resistance workouts, when an insulin spike can help shuttle protein to muscles for repair.

For regular meals, however, the order would be fibrous foods, healthy fats, then healthy proteins. Sugars may follow if you must. Although, fruits may be acceptable last, in moderation. It seems common sense that blueberries (sugars and fiber) will produce a higher spike than, say, spinach (fibrous with less sugar.)

Thus, an example meal would be: Spinach and cauliflower medley (fibrous), followed by (or combined with) an avocado. Then chicken breast, lean meats, or salmon. Followed by a sensible portion of fruit, if it makes sense for your goals.

It is important to thoroughly chew food, as this will help digestion and appropriate insulin-spike preparation, when eating foods in a given order, with the aim of lessening any insulin spike.

Healthy fats and fiber have been shown to help blunt insulin spikes of other foods.

Please note, even if a food is low on the glycemic index, it may still raise insulin significantly. Beef is one example.

How to Fix Right-Click Not Working in Chrome Browser for Mac

The problem is usually due to an extension. Even if Safari right-click works, but not Chrome, this solution may help you, as it did for me.

To fix, right click on an extension within the bar in your chrome browser (usually on same line as your URL.)

Next, click "Manage Extensions."

Disable ALL extensions.

That fixed the problem for me.

To add extensions back, you will need to add one at a time, to see which individual extension was breaking your Chrome.

This fixed my issue with 2018 Chrome Browser 64, on Mac OS High Sierra on a 2017 Apple laptop.

How to Put Laptop Computer in Oven To Treat Water Damage

I recently and accidentally spilled water on my HP laptop. A lot. It got on the keyboard, the underside, maybe in the air vents...

I put paper towels to mitigate the damage. The screen was still on, and seemed ok. I soaked up the water from the keyboard.

I then held the laptop upside down to shake the water out from the keyboard. Around this time, the screen went black, although I could hear the hard drive and/or fans making noise (not sure which, most likely fans. Same noise as ever when it is on.)

Long story short, the screen would not go on, and the computer, after I turned it off, would not turn back on.

What to do if this happens to you.

I would say power down the laptop as soon as possible, and remove the battery.

I put my laptop in the oven. As you can see on this blog, I had put my iPhone in the oven multiple times, with no problems. The reason I felt ok doing that with my phone, and now laptop (long story short, the laptop is ok now, and I am typing from it now!) is that I noticed saunas (the ones I go to, anyway) get around 180 degrees. My iPhone 4 used to complain that it was too hot to use, but that is all. It never melted nor exploded. According to a quick Google search, saunas (with humans in them) get up to 221 degrees Fahrenheit. I have not taken electronics in there, so I would not set my oven to 200+, but certainly 170-180 degrees F.

Please note, I am not encouraging you necessarily to put your laptop in the oven. I am simply saying it worked fine for me, and saved me from having to buy a new computer. If you choose to do this, it is your choice.

Moving right along.

1. Remove the battery.
2. Turn oven on to lowest setting. Mine is 170. 
3. Put the laptop inside. 
4. Check on it in increments of 5 minutes at first. Simply to make sure it hasn't melted or exploded etc. This means, simply cracking open the door a bit for a visual scan. 

My laptop was in the oven around 20 or 30 minutes. Then, I turned off the actual heat, and left it in there for another 20 minutes or so (to fully cool down.) I took it out once it was cool to touch, and it works perfectly well now. Why people tip - a hypothesis

I think people tip for service jobs in which service is a big part of the experience. For example a waiter/waitress for you and 11 friends is someone who can have a big impact on your mood. This is unlike say, a packaged good (for example, an xbox), where the good itself is all that matters. Waitress + Food = Experience, but xbox + nothing else (only other games) = experience. So you pay for the physical good itself.

However this raises the question of car dealers. Your salesperson has a huge impact on your experience. however, you don't (usually) tip them because they make a commission instead for their "service."

In essence I believe people tip for jobs where service/performance is a major part of the deal. Sometimes you tip a freelancer/shop owner as well, and i believe the idea that not tipping the salon owner (haircuts) is erroneous, unless he or she turns it down. The idea is that people in these industries are given less by the employer, because they do work that depends very much on skill (which fluctuates, such a hair-cutter who is unskilled in cutting for, say, spiky hair.) If the establishment just paid these service workers a flat rate, then it might be too much (in which you'd have to pay more, even if you hated the service) or too little (which would just lead to more tipping.)

Tipping in other words is your rating system. You give the reward on terms of how good the service was, and how much the skill is worth, along with what the person can reasonably expect. So pizza delivery might get $2-3, while upscale dining may get a percent instead, depending on how difficult it is to do (how many dishes, how nice, etc.) But not for things that aren't the waiter's fault (bad food, which she should take back if asked, or crying baby a few tables away, unless you asked to be reaseated.)

How to "Undecline" or Re-Hire A Programmer After Declining Them on Odesk

If you have sent a provider (say, a programmer) a job offer, perhaps you later withdrew it. But then, you decide you will offer it to them again. Here is how to do that:

1. Go to Messages tab
2. Find the corresponding emails in your Sent folder (they will start with "Offer: [Job title.]")
3. Go to the first message (it was sent by you.)
4. Click on the link where it says "view offer."

How to fix mvn --version or -v Not Recognized Error in Windows but you have Netbeans 7 or higher

I earlier had a difficult time trying to set up Maven for Java. However, Maven does come bundled with NetBeans's newer versions (as of this writing.) Here's how to fix the error that cmd or cygwin does not recognize Maven.

First check whether your netbeans has Maven available in the first place:

where you can see the maven binaries.

If you don't have that, your Netbeans hasn't got Maven. Head over to https://github.com/tamingtext/book and see "Building the source."

Next, get into your command prompt of choice  (for me it's currently cygwin; the default for most is perhaps Windows Start > Run > type "CMD"). Run mvn --version. You should get something like the following:

 If not, you'll have some things to fix. ETA, 10 mins.

The things I had to do were make variables, and point them to specific places. Let's start with the"path" variable. You may see it online in other help articles as PATH or something else, %PATH% or so on. For my own purposes, I found it via the following on Windows 8: hit Windows key (on keyboard) and Pause/Break at the same time. This should get you to "System." Then go to "Advanced system settings", which should be on the right hand side in Windows 8. This will take you to the screen "System Properties." From there visit "Environment Variables," which should be near the bottom of the window.

In the new Environment Variables window, you will find two possible variables to make: user variables and System variables. We will only be concerned with System variables for now. So go to the "Path" variable, you will likely need to scroll to find it. There is also PATHEXT, but ignore that. Click to edit "Path." It may  be helpful to copy-past the contents into notepad (NOT ms word.) You'll see that Path contained many 'paths' to different areas on the C drive. They are separated by a ";", except at the end when a ";" is not necessary.

Now that you found your "Path" variable, you're ready to make a new directional toward your maven installation that came bundles with Netbeans. You first need to find you Maven bin. For me, it was at C:\Program Files\NetBeans 7.4\java\maven\bin. Luckily Win8 does have a great search capacity, so try searching for "maven\bin" exactly. (I bring up search via putting the cursor in the upper right hand corner, then looking for the magnifying glass symbol.) You may find a small little file called "mvn" under results, hover over it to confirm that it is maven\bin. Alternatively, you can use

where you can see the maven binaries. >> again, and just find the location that way.


Once you get that location, copy and paste it into your Path variable mentioned earlier. Remember you can use Notepad or similar to edit it more easily, and separate them with ";", except at the end. Go ahead and save that and hit ok on the System Properties screen as well.

Next, restart you command terminal if it was already open. Just close all instances, then reopen. Perhaps even check the Task Manager to make sure your terminal isn't running. Then, open a new instance. Type mvn --version again. You should get a better message new, saying something similar to

from last time. However, there is a decent chance it will tell you that JAVA HOME is not pointing to the right pathway. So if that's the case with your setup, let's continue.

Go back to System Variables and check to see if you have a JAVA_HOME variable. If not, you'll need to make one. Either way, fill it with the location to your Java installation bin. The best option is to point it toward your JDK, not the JRE. The JDK, as far as I know, has both the virtual environment you'll need, but the Java language itself. So it has the best of both things.

To find your JDK, search java.exe, using the same search method as last time. I personally found 79 matching files for the term, but what we want is the java.exe in the JDK folder, NOT the JRE's. In Win8.1 and perhaps others, you can hover over the results to see their full file paths. For me, the JDK path was C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.7.0_51\.

If you absolutely cannot find your JDK folder, perhaps you don't have it; download it from the oracle site.

After locating the JDK path, put it in the JAVA_HOME system variable.

After this, once more make sure you have no terminals open, then open a new one. And after running mvn --version, your run of Maven should be a success!

How to Make Bullet Points Smaller Font in Kingsoft Writer

In Kingsoft Office/Writer 2013, if you are getting huge bullet points (compared to MS Word, for example) here's how to fix that:

1. Right-click on the offending bullet point
2. Click Bullets and Numbering
3. Click Customize
4. In the "Customize Outline Numbered List" window, select Font
5. If you are writing in text font size 14, try size 8 for the bullet points. Where it says Size on the top level, select 8.
6. Select OK and exit all windows accordingly

How to Create a Playlist in VLC

For this guide, I will assume you already have a folder with correctly numbered VLC-playable videos.

1. Add one of the videos to VLC (you can just play it, or select VLC first as default if not already done so.)
2. At the bottom of the VLC window, you should see a Play button (basically a triangle pointing sideways.) To the right of that, click the little icon that has a bullet-point and list. If you hover your mouse, it will likely say "playlist."
3. Click that.
4. Now you are in the Playlist mode. Add your other videos. If they arrive out of order, you may sort them. To do so, click along the top row where it says, "Title." There are other options to sort, such as by duration and ID. You may get even more by right-clicking along the aforementioned row.
5. Then click, along the top-most bar, "Media" then "Save Playlist to File." Choose a location where you want to be able to click-and-run the file. 
6. Done!

Udacity is a great place to learn computer-science related topics. Sometimes the quizzes get in the way, however, and you don't want the playlist to pause every time. Here's the link to get around that -

How To Skip Pandora Video Ads on iPhone

Using iOS 7 and the latest Pandora of today, here's how to skip those annoying video ads.

1. When an ad comes on (the video type which hijacks your screen), pull the top-view down (as if checking old text messages etc.)
2. With your finger still having control of the pull-down screen, keep it down near the bottom of the screen, hovering. DO NOT let go of the pull-down screen.
3. The ad should go away at this point.

How to solve “undefined method `title' for nil:NilClass” in Rails Tutorial

If you are following http://guides.rubyonrails.org/getting_started.html or similar, you may get the awful  “undefined method `title' for nil:NilClass” problem. In that case, just go over to app\controllers\post_controllers.rb and put all "private" headers at the bottom. For example, if you have,

which you should, as it's part of the tutorial, then make sure this block, and any others that say anything about being private, as far down the column as possible. Here's how mine ended up looking afterward:

How To Use An Oven to Save A Water-Damaged iPhone

I've put my iPhone in the oven two times now, all in the name of saving it from water damage. It's worked perfectly both times with no adverse affects.

Please note, I take no responsibility if something goes horribly, horribly wrong with your phone. I've used this on my iPhone 4. Here's how.

Get a container you can put in the oven (glassware is great.) Put a bunch of rice in there (enough to cover a phone.) Turn off the iPhone (doesn't matter if battery is charged or not, I've tried it both ways), and make sure to take off any case (except those clear sticker cases, which are ok) and stick the iPhone in there so that it is completely covered in the rice, INCLUDING ON THE BOTTOM. You do not want your iPhone touching anything but rice. I suggest white rice, but not sure if any other type would be bad. This will prevent the hotter-to-the-touch glass from contacting the phone.

So stick your phone in the oven and turn it on. I have used convection and normal bake modes. Honestly I think the convection method worked better. If you don't have that, the normal mode should be ok. Set it to the lowest temperature, which is for me 170 degrees. I'd suggest not over 180. 200 is an absolute keep-your-fingers-crossed maximum, for my money.

How long? I'd say increments of 20 minutes. Once I forgot it and it was in there for 40 minutes straight. No worries, but stay on the safe side. Just check it out, make sure battery acid hasn't exploded everywhere (or, that it's not TOO hot to the touch; it should be kinda hot like you left it in the sun a long time, but you should still be able to handle it.) Unless you dropped it in the toilet or some other embarrassing thing, the phone should be good to go after 20 to 30 minutes, depending on convection methods etc.

How do I feel comfortable doing this?
I have been in the sauna at the gym before, where it gets up to 180 degrees. The worst thing that happened is my phone showed a exclamation point warning and locked the phone until it cooled down. For the iPhone in oven method, just turn it off, then wait for it to cool down before using.

To cool down your phone: DO NOT stick it in the freezer or refrigerator. There be moisture in there. You can let it cool down on its own, or take it in your hands and let the heat transfer away to you.

Why rice?
Rice has natural drying properties. Some water damage phone guides say to use only rice, but that is unnecessarily long.

The problems I solved with my phone:
One time when it was really damaged and showed only some strange blue screen with garbled colors.
Another time (today, actually) when it was possessed (by water), and it was doing all sorts of random home-button functions (mostly sending me to Voice Control or whatever it's called.

How to Trade Properties in Monopoly for iPhone

In "bird's-eye" view mode (looking at the whole board):

1. At the bottom of the horizontal screen, you will see a number of square buttons. If you have not already rolled, you will see a some dice.
2. You should also see two deed cards (they actually look more like old-school wheel iPods) with red and green arrows facing each other. Tap this button.
3. If there are more than two players, click the icon of the player you want to trade with. Then tap the green checkmark button. 
4. Now you are able to tap that players cards, and view them up-close. Tap the one you want.
5. Tap the card once more, once it is already shown close-up. This will select it, and you will see a green checkmark in that card's upper-right hand corner. To deselect, just tap it again.
6. Tap the green checkmark button at the bottom of the screen to exit close-up view. 
7. Continue doing this for any other properties, and money trades. You can select more than one property per trade. 
8. Once you are finished, tap the green icon on the bottom of the screen, with the hand holding a deed card (looks like a calculator.)
9. If you are trading AI, you may choose to offer more if they decline your first offer. 

Tip: Be very careful in this screen! It is possible to give your property away for absolutely nothing by forgetting or simply not entering any $ or card value for the other player. Also, beware of "fat thumbs" - make sure to confirm whether it says "decline" or "accept" when doing either action from another player's offer. Those two action buttons are very close to each other.

How to Mortgage a Property in Monopoly for iPhone

Once you own a property:

1. From the "bird's-eye" view, tap the property you want to mortgage.
2. Tap a second time to see the Title Deed (card) for the property you want to mortgage.
3. On the left, on the black card saying who owns the property (must be you to mortgage), there is a green button with the icon of what appears to be a bank. Click on that to mortgage, and confirm.

What To Do If iTunes Won't Let You Change a File Type (Music, iTunes U etc.)

If you have just imported a file into your iTunes library, and are having trouble changing the file type of any other properties under "Get Info," this brief guide is for you.

The problem is easily fixed. Go to the folder or original destination where the file you imported is. It is likely that the file has been marked "Read Only," which is preventing you from making changes. To fix this, follow these instructions from the Microsoft Help page (in Windows):

1. Find the file you want to edit. Right-click the file, and then click Properties.
2. Click the General tab, clear the Read-only check box, and then click OK.
3. Edit and save your file as needed.

Now that you have done that, delete the files that you already imported into iTunes, and do so from within iTunes. This will get rid of the unchanging files. iTunes may ask if you want to get rid of your original files, but say no; you will re-import these shortly.

After deleting the troublesome files from iTunes, just re-import the files after you changed them to not be read-only. Now you can change them freely!

How To Find Bookmarks.plist in Windows 8 and 7

Here is how to find bookmarks.plist on Windows 8, 7, and possibly Vista. Apple and Windows really hide this from users, so this guide will save you quite a bit of time.

1. Access the "Run" command from the start menu. On Windows 8, put the mouse cursor in the lower-left hand corner of the screen, then double-click; select "Run."
2. Type the following in the Run command line: %appdata%
3. Hit enter.
4. Find the "Apple Computer" file in the folder that pops up for you, courtesy of the Run command.
5. Open "Apple Computer," then open "Safari"
6. You will see "Bookmarks.plist" here. 

Bookmarks.plist contains your reading list and bookmarks info for Safari. Safari unfortunately does not allow easy moving around and management of the "reading list" feature. Possibly, you could just switch a new Safari installation's file with the old bookmarks.plist file you have, thus importing it like that.

How to Fix Errors Related to ImageMagick When Using Paperclip

While following along with a Team Treehouse tutorial on Installing Paperclip, I was getting a Paperclip::Errors::NotIdentifiedByImageMagickError. This would happen whenever trying to upload an avatar or change an image album.

What went wrong first: On the ImageMagick page, under Binary Windows Installations, I first used ImageMagick-6.8.6-9-Q16-x86-dll.exe. However, after much difficulty I could not get that to work in Treebook. The program "IMDisplay" would run normally on my PC, once I clicked the desktop file, but it was not working at all for my online purposes.

In the end, I deleted that installation (Windows Uninstall.) Going back to the IM download page (binary, windows, same page as before) I instead elected to go for ImageMagick-6.8.6-9-Q16-x64-dll.exe. I am running Windows 8 x64, so that seemed more suitable (the descriptions on the same page say which are Win32 and which are Win64.)

 An interesting note: I did not shut down any other running apps during my first installation of IM. It did "recommend" this, but I did not elect to do it. However, on the second approach, with a different installation, I closed all other apps, being extra cautious.

Once I began installing IM for the second time, I carefully read all notes. I ran the following in a bare (not "rubified") CMD window (In Windows 8, Run>CMD). (These are per the instructions that can be found in the IM install wizard, once it is successful.)

First type: C:\Users\MyAdminUsername>convert wizard: wizard.jpg
Hit enter, then type: C:\Users\MyAdminUsername>convert wizard.jpg win:

After "convert wizard: wizard.jpg" it won't really say anything, and will just give the "C:\ ..." prompt again. However keep going with the second "convert..." command as mentioned above. Then it will open the converted file, showing a successful installation.
